Exorcist Chronicles (2013) Review by ASouthernHorrorFan from United States
"Exorcist Chronicles" is a UK paranormal thriller directed by PhilipGardiner. The film stars Rudy Barrow, Liz Mente Bishop, Nathan Head andBob Lee. The story was built on the premise that an epidemic of demonicpossessions are increasing at an alarming rate. The story-line followsa priest charged with handling an "outbreak" of these possessions in aregion of England with the assistance of an Epidemiologist. This issupposedly meant as the humanizing drive of the story, which is setagainst flash sequences of Vatican archival footage, of possessioncases, studied. I say supposedly because on all accounts the film failsto really connect on a personal level with the audience, or show anyreal humanizing aspects. Which is sad because this Indie flick had allthe opportunities to be a decent little exorcism movie. The Vatican'sincreasing collection of documented cases, Science vs. the Spiritualand a demon that hasn't been overused in possession mythos-personallyone of my favorite Mesopotamian deities – TIAMAT. It was my avatar'sname in Second Life, an experience that lasted all of three days!Somehow, though- the story and production got away from the directorand creative team behind this project. Big time!

"Exorcist Chronicles" starts off flat. After a pretty nice credit rollthe film just lingers on the first scene as quiet as the dead. A priestresiding over someone's bedside- I am assuming death bed because twomore priests enter, only to mutter in a few short sentences, declaringthe priest Father Death. No reason is given and we are forced to justtake their word for it and move on. Then just as blunt as the firstscene plays out another scene begins with no real dialog or story leadto suggest why or where or anything really that would give any realdepth to the situation. This seems to be the running premise throughoutthe film. Just a series of random scenes of characters that we areshown, with very little dialog, that actually give some understandingto their purpose within the story, or why we should even care! No arcs,no real guiding stream of consciousness that would validate thecharacters, or hook the story's themes together. All of this is onlybroken by scenes of various demonically possessed people. In a way thatalmost comes off as some type of Catholic compulsory hording fetish ofthe possessed. Most of these almost surrealistic moments play out ingrandiose artfilm fashion, that belong more in rock music videos thanin movies. And sadly these little visual artistic experiences arereally the only thing that suggests any emotional involvement from thedirector or writers.

There is some dialog-don't get me wrong-the cast doesn't mime out thestory. The dialog is just so short and unattached to the meat of theoverall synopsis that it almost seems pointless. The characters are onedimensional and way under developed. It never goes deep or offers thedetails needed to prove the plot, or solidify the events that takeplace in the film. Mostly it is just basic banter about first personnecessity or requirement –like "How long has this been happening?" or"Don't you believe in the presence of evil". Pray, pray, pray, blah, blah, blah. Even the exorcisms were weak and not fully visualized. Idon't know what really happened with the film but it just seemed likeone big carousel of randomness, hoping we understand that -"everythingis implied". It is like we jumped in in the middle of events, and onlyglimpsed small portions of what was happening, only to be thrown intoanother moment. Actually I think this may be the first film withBritish actors that was disappointing. The story wasn't in-depth orthought provoking-really didn't even seem smart. Even the character'sseemed contrived and almost pointless. Not to mention that the actingwas way below the standard UK talent pool-which really almost neverhappens, except for actors like Hugh Grant-they really fell flat. And acouple of characters where so unrealistic that it seemed ridiculous. The only real quality moments in the film came from the creativeexpressionism style, shown with the Vatican footage or flashes ofdemonically possessed characters. Set those to some Death Metal and youmay just have something here.

I hate when I give bad reviews. It kind of depresses me, so muchnegativity. However, like I always say-Don't let anyone's review oropinion of a film keep you from checking it out yourself. Everyone seesand relates differently and uniquely. What was lost on me with thisfilm may connect with you-just go into "Exorcist Chronicles"forewarned.

Exorcist Chronicles (2013) Review by Bill Hicks from Washington

This movie takes the fun right out of all of the "Genuine Footage" typeof movies. Very poor acting and extremely poor sound quality.Unfortunately, I took this ride before reading any other reviews.

Another extreme issue that I see is the very sad attempt at a play offof the "Exorcist" films. This is by no means a part of that franchiseor anything even close to it.

As a big fan of paranormal films, this one has taken me for a ride intoa new realm of movies that I never want to visit again. I rented "GraveEncounters" expecting it to be horrible, low budget and yet it wasfantastic, kept my girl biting her nails and peeking over the covers. Iwas hoping the same here but, not even close. I see a great idea andthe potential for it was certainly there.

This movie seems like it was made for fun by some high school kids witha project due for their drama teacher. Then and only then would Iconsider giving this an A rating, because it is simply is at anelementary level. I also could see the actors looking off away fromeach other, almost like looking past each other during dialog. Werethey looking past each other to read cue cards? It sure looks like it.I almost gave it a 2 rating because of breasts but, I simply could notfind it within me to do so.

Exorcist Chronicles (2013) Review by allenelswick1979 from United States

The movie is nothing but a bunch of "found footage, eyes only" scenesof people being possessed or something. There is a sorta story about apriest and a woman that are investigating a raise in possessions butmostly they hang out in an RV. Oh, and there is crazy guy that runsaround the woods, and a lot of ugly women showing their breasts. Thesound is awful, it drifts in and out. There are times when you can nothear what a person is saying. The lack of an audible voice track is sobad that the closed captioning says "unknown" or "(inaudible)". I'mpretty sure this movie was made by a few 10-years one weekend, if nothen anyone who worked on the film should be ashamed of them selves. The movie was so bad, I'm not even going to proof read this review.

Allen Elswick.
